Mac & Cheese

Acme café is a testament of the ever-changing neighborhood of Gastown. Rachel and I were curious of the diner experience that Acme has advertised and we decided to pay them a visit.

Veggie Panini -goat cheese, portobello mushroom, peppers, zucchini, sprouts, sun-dried tomato basil mayo. Ciabatta panini grilled. Served with a cole slaw and potato chips

The veggie Panini was surprising to say the least. The goat cheese and the different textures from the veggies really worked well together. The sundried tomato and basil mayo gave the goat cheese and veggies more depth as the grilled Ciabatta Panini acted as a capsule that contained all the different elements within this dish. I especially enjoyed how the zucchini and sprout gave the Panini some refreshing crunch to counterbalance the richness of the cheese and the mayo. The flavour of the Portobello mushroom also came through really nicely and I felt that the mushroom and the goat cheese combination was the perfect match.

Barbecue Chicken Quiche - Served with a Cream of Wilde Mushroom Soup and Green Salad

I couldn’t pass up ordering the daily quiche, which was Barbeque Chicken quiche served with a cup of Cream of Wild Mushroom soup and green salad. I found the quiche to be really rich with chicken flavour. The white meat, within the quiche, was not over cooked either as it was not rough at all. The cheddar cheese within and on the crust gave the quiche a much-needed creamy element and I was really pleased with the fluffiness of the eggs that held the quiche together. The soup was, however, a little disappointing because it was neither creamy nor thick enough.

Side Mac and Cheese

The classic Mac and cheese was rustic and homey. The thick layer of cheddar cheese and bread crumbs crust on top put a country style twist on the dish, which I really appreciated because it accentuated comfort factor of the Mac and Cheese.  However, I felt that the cheese flavour was not pronounced enough, as I could only taste a small amount of cheddar flavour from the top layer. In this respect, I would much rather eat the Four Cheese Macaroni from Au Petite Chavignol. The Mac and Cheese from Acme was by no means bad but I felt that it could definitely be improved upon.

Overall, I really enjoyed the nostalgic diner décor and atmosphere of Acme café. Both Rachel and I found the food to be very comforting and well executed with some exceptions. I give Acme café a strong 7 out of 10. If you guys are in the area I would definitely give Acme café a visit.
