Passing by the Kitsilano area, Rachel and I decide to drop into Romer’s Burger Bar to try their burgers and other dishes that they offer. It had been on our list for a while, since we have been trying to find the right place to quench our burger craving that comes up from time to time.
I decided to order the Magic Mushroom, which consisted of Angus beef patty accompanied by chopped Portobello mushrooms, arugula, herb and garlic Boursin cheese and caramelized onions all sandwiched between a griddled brioche bun. We were thoroughly impressed by the patty due to the texture of the beef. It was neither too hard nor too soft as it gave just the right bounce when you bite into it. However, we thought the burger could have used some more mushrooms and some caramelized onions would have been welcomed as we could not see or taste the caramelized onions in my burger.

Veggie Portobello Stack: Grilled eggplant, roasted zucchini, Soleggiati tomatoes, red peppers, red onion, fresh basil, crumbled goat cheese, portobello mushroom bun, red pepper vinaigrette
Rachel ordered the Veggie Portobello Stack and when it arrived we were immediately surprised by its presentation. We had been expecting the image of the Portobello stack from their website menu, which looked more like a burger, but in reality it turned out to be quite different. Due to it’s inherent structure, it was much more appropriate to eat the Portobello stack with a fork and knife. In our opinion, the stack could have used much more cheese as the charred vegetables could be rather bland even with the red pepper vinaigrette. However, we still enjoyed this dish because of its texture. The vegetables were not overcooked therefore the vegetables had a great charred flavour while keeping its crisp texture.
To share we to ordered a side of fries with truffle oil and truffle mayo under the recommendation, by our server, that the fries with truffle oil and truffle mayo would be a great truffle experience. To our disappointment, when it actually came to eating the fries none of the aforementioned truffle flavours could be tasted. The fries were not too salty and it was actually very crispy, however we were just let down with the lack of truffle flavours.
Overall Romer’s Burger Bar gave us a fine experience, however it wasn’t exceptional. We just couldn’t help but imagine how much better Romer’s Burger Bar could have been without each setback within every dish. I would give Romer’s a solid 7.5 out of 10 and our search for the perfect burger joint continues…

Sincerely,
Oliver
